Chapter 17

Willow and Cider started back to the diner, Willow’s head swirling with all the information she had discovered that morning. It was also swirling with the attitudes of some of the contestants.

Dane was waiting for them when they arrived at the diner. “There you are. I’ve been waiting. How did it go?”

“Good, I think. Let’s start.” she motioned to the pancake prep Dane had laid out.

Willow immediately began to tell him about the interviews, and as she did, the two of them started prepping. She started sifting together all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.

As she whisked it together she explained. “I went to see Dee Rooney first. She was very kind and seemed to appreciate my pancakes and even thanked me for them. She said she just likes pancakes and didn’t enter the competition to win. I just don’t think she cared enough to have poisoned Bob. Nor do I think she is the poisoning type. For right now I am taking her off my suspect list.”

Willow continued whisking the dry ingredients together as she thought about her experience with Adam Gill and how much of that to share with her overprotective brother. As she spoke, the two of them continued to prep the pancakes.

Willow was still concerned about how Adam had reacted when she went to ask him questions.

“Adam Gill however was quite rude, at least at first,” she started to explain carefully. “He was hostile from the moment I stepped into Timber Creek Guides and all but accused me of poisoning Bob and Donna.”

Dane scoffed. “Please. If you were responsible for the poisonings, it would put you in jail and the diner out of business. No one in their right mind would accuse you of doing something that would put the diner in jeopardy after you fought so hard to clear your name after Sarah Drummond’s death and now these pancake poisonings.”

“He said it was negligent of the competition to allow me to continue catering it.” She tried to hide the disappointment in her voice. “But then I got mad at him since Dee had told me he was basically a nice guy.”

“Uh-oh.” Dane stopped working and looked at her, a frown on his face.

Willow smiled. “Don’t worry. I think he was flattered that Dee said something nice about him, and he started telling me this wild tale about a grizzly bear and an ice chest.”

“We don’t have grizzlies down here. So is he just a nutjob?”

“I don’t think so. In fact, I think it was his way of apologizing.”

Dane sighed. “Strange way to say, ‘I’m sorry.’”

“I know, and he did tell me that the town really suspects that I had something to do with Bob and Donna.”

“We already knew that. Did he give you anything we don’t know?”

Willow shook her head. “No. He didn’t have any suggestions at all.”

They finished prepping the dry ingredients and moved on to mixing up the wet ingredients with Willow’s supervision. Dane cracked eggs into a bowl while Willow melted
